Use of phones in flight mode

Post by Jasmine-de-paul on Wed 28 Apr 2010 - 11:10

Hey all

Does anyone know if you are allowed on Ryanair flights to use phones (iphone) in flight mode? - all calling, roming and call features are disabled and you can use it to watch videos or listen to music in the ipod function?

Have seen folk with laptops out but i have never flown with Ryanair b4?
thanks

Hello there,
Cellphones cannot be used, not even in Flight Mode.
You must switch off your phone and only turn it on after you land.

Umm, no ?

You are alowed to use electronics after the seatbelt sign has been turned off.

Yes, it's true. You can use laptops, MP3 / Multimedia portable players, but you can't use a phone. Not even in flight mode.
I've made 12 flights with Ryanair and in all of them, the message was clear. No cellphones, not even in flight mode.
Cheers

you can use mobile phones in normal mode as long as the plane gives you the possibility to make calls wile airborne. in ryanair you have a phone on / off sign inside most of the 737s. see the image here : http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/runway-girl/Ryanair%204.jpg
the only time it is really dangerous to use any electronic device ( mp3 , mobile phone, etc ) is during refuelling. During take of or landing you are also not allowed to use them to increase safety.

The mobile phone system is currently switched OFF.

So currently, all mobile phones, even those in flight mode must remain switched OFF until you reach the main terminal building

Since this thread is now more than two years old, I was wondering if Ryanair still doesn't allow passengers to use their mobile phones in flight mode after the seatbelt sign has been turned off?

Phones in plane or flight mode CAN be used once airborne and when the seat belt sign is off. All electronic devices have to be OFF for take off, taxi and landing. Still some people are arguing that the phone is on flight mode so it is off, but it has to be completely off

Regarding the Kindle devices, they have to completely off too, the splash screen is not good enough as it is still using power. To power them off, hold the button to put it on standby for 7 seconds =]

Don't see a point from this rule... It's just stupid.
During the day I see many people using their devices, I tell them to switch them off, but most of them continue to do so when I and n1 pass they take them out again.. and it happens worldwide on each flight every day, however still haven't heard of an incident caused by PED...
I don't see anything wrong with filming the takeoff/landing as long as they don't film me during the demo! Smile

However this is just my opinion.

Stupid rule based on no scientific evidence. A flight mode activated phone presents no danger, the phone manufacturers ensure they are safe for this purpose. Personally, and I know it's against the rules, I just have my phone in flight mode sat in my pocket and the flight attendants don't know.

Flight mode is a setting available on many cell phones, smartphones and other electronic devices that, when engaged, suspends many of the device's signal transmitting functions – thereby disabling the device's capacity to place or receive calls or text messages – while still permitting use of other functions that do not require signal transmission (e.g., games, built-in camera, MP3 player).

My new Nexus 7 which is not a phone but a 7 inch tablet with wifi. It has "aeroplane mode" but after selecting aeroplane mode and with the little aeroplane showing at the top of the screen I was able to turn the wifi on and it worked. A bit odd, no?
