Ryanair withdraws Alicante flight from Newquay

Budget airline Ryanair has pulled out of Newquay Airport, citing Cornwall Council's £5 development charge to airport users.

The decisions comes only days after Air Southwest announced it was scrapping its Newquay to Plymouth to London route.

Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said the airline's Newquay to Alicante route over the summer season would not be retained.

"Ryanair regrets that due to the continued imposition of Newquay airport's £5 airport development charge Ryanair will no longer operate summer season flights between Newquay and Alicante," he said.

"Ryanair apologises to passengers affected by this announcement."

The company has previously criticised the levy charged to passengers at the airport. It cancelled flights between the county and Stansted in 2009, blaming the charge for a fall in passenger numbers.

Tim Jones, from the Devon and Cornwall Business Council, said the decision was disappointing but Ryanair was likely to return. He said the news about Air Southwest was more significant and "a huge body-blow".

The airport's MD Al Titterington said he was disappointed at Ryanair's decision to cease operations from Newquay.

"While we remain disappointed at Ryanair's decision, we understand the pressures the aviation industry faces and as a small regional airport we have to work with the airline's route network decisions," he said.

Maybe they should look at flying from Plymouth instead?

I really hoped RyanAir might take advantage of these smaller airports such as Newquay.

Devon and Cornwall desperately need an airport and even if flights were once or twice a week with the right destinations and times, they could be suitably utilised.

I flew out of (NQY)Newquay a couple of years ago to (STN)Stansted on a Ryanair flight, we were a party of 4 and did not realise we had to pay £5 each to depart so had to find £20 instantly, we were never advised before departure at the time nor at the time of booking,(unsure if other airlines advise customers now but be aware) If NQY drop the charge maybe Ryanair will resume operations again.
The nearest to NQY is (PLH)Plymouth unsure if it can accept a B738,(EXT)Exeter is probably the next . It would be ideal if NQY and Ryanair come to a agreement, I holiday alot in cornwall and during the week we use to do a hop into (BRE)Bremen via (STN)Stansted returning the next day, for next to nothing - The good old days-Great days out with Great Low Deals.
