Passport details not reqd when booking, when did this change

just booked flight one way to tenerife always used to ask for passport numbers etc at booking....

whats the drill does not ask anymore??? when did this change?

when you online book in for flight does it ask?

The passport (or I.D.) number, nationality, limit of validity are to be given at the time of online check-in.
When booking, you are requested to give your email address and mobile phone number (number of other phone now only if you have no mobile), and card holder address.
