We'll mis the old MOL !

At Carcassonnne airport, I’m missing Michael O’Leary already. The real one, I mean - not the corporate pussy-cat on view recently (most lately last Monday when announcing Ryanair losses). This new version stretches credulity. He sounds like any other be-suited businessman. I require the original - he who called a passenger “stupid” for failing to print a boarding pass, who advocated the shooting of environmentalists, and dressed as a leprechaun to add gravitas to his proposals.

For a start, I need him to sort out Carcassonne airport itself. For as long as I can recall, it has been undergoing renovation. Presently, it looks like one of those airports you see on TV “in the hands of rebel forces” - though I fancy rebel forces would insist on better croissants. At any event, I’d be gratified if O’Leary took over, kicked a few butts and got the construction finished within some sort of reasonable delay. (Fanfare: “Another on-time airport from O’Leary’s the builders!”).

Most of all, though, I need him to restore order. This being one of the very final Ryanair flights before seat allocation (introduced last weekend), everyone in the departure lounge stands up hours too early, fearful that the plane - which has not even landed at Carcassonne yet - will somehow sneak off without them. Cue O’Leary: “A passenger announcement: ’Sit down, suckers! We’re going to Liverpool. You’ll all be coming with us. That’s what f****** passengers are for.” This would make me feel better.

I also need him to exchange bracing words with those who - boarding the plane at both front and back - take the first free seats rather than moving down the aisle to the middle and filling up from there. As they stow their cases and coats, then remember they’ve left their telephone on in a coat pocket and their book in the case, they come back out into the aisle with a “silly me!” smile of sorry. Meanwhile, monstrous tailbacks are caused on the steps and the tarmac and it’s chucking it down in Carcassonne - on widows, orphans and everyone

It is often claimed that Ryanair treats customers like cattle. This is nonsense. It is the passengers who behave like cattle (though cattle queue better, especially after milking). The airline staff deal with this with, in my experience, saintly patience, as if they’d taken vows of courtesy.

And yet, instead of consolidating his estimable zero tolerance of customers, Mr O’Leary is suddenly going soft on them, with quiet flights, second carry-on bags and, on the website, 24 hours to change “Pettigrew” to “Peregrine” for those too stupid to spell their own names correctly at the first attempt.

He’s also caught corporate-speak. Soft-soaping Ryanair’s £28.7 million third-quarter loss earlier this week, he used terms like “ancillary”, “albeit”, “based on current visibility” and, most alarmingly, “customer service”. This is the man who once advised a complaining client: “We don’t want to hear your sob stories. What part of 'no refund’ don’t you understand?” We’re missing him already, and not just at Carcassonne.
