It was decided today that Gothenburg City Airport is going to close, it would cost Swedavia SEK 250M to rebuild GSE and they have decided that they would rather invest that money in Landvetter (GOT).

Let see what FR does now, a permanent switch to Landvetter would surely result in a bigger bill...

Approach to Göteborg City Airport adopted

In-depth analyses of the runway system at Göteborg City Airport indicate that extensive measures are needed for the long-term development of the airport. As a result, Swedavia has decided to acquire the remaining shares in the company that operates the airport and has adopted an approach to the gradual winding down of operations at Göteborg City Airport.

Since late November, heavy passenger traffic at Göteborg City Airport has been redirected to Göteborg Landvetter Airport. This is the result of potential deficiencies identified in the runway system. In-depth analyses of the runway system have now determined that extensive measures are needed in order for heavier passenger traffic to return to airport. Investment requirements for the runway system are estimated to be around SEK 250 M.

In light of the heavy passenger traffic that constitutes the basis of operations at Göteborg City Airport, Swedavia has decided to take over the remaining shares in the company that operates the airport. At the same time, Swedavia has adopted an approach to the continued development of Göteborg Landvetter Airport in order to ensure the region’s access. Operations at Göteborg City Airport will thus be wound down over the long term. Therefore Swedavia today gave notice to all employees at the airport.

“Unfortunately, there is no potential to develop Göteborg City Airport in a way that promotes the opportunity to travel to and from the West Götaland region. It is therefore necessary to concentrate resources on Göteborg Landvetter Airport in order to contribute to the region’s continued development in the best way,” says Karl Wistrand, deputy CEO at Swedavia.

Commercial airlines that have operations at Göteborg City Airport will be offered opportunities to set up operations at Göteborg Landvetter Airport. In addition, dialogues will be initiated with the remaining operations, including general aviation and aviation of service to society, with the aim of finding long-term solutions. However, these   operations will be able to use the infrastructure until further notice.

The Swedavia Group owns, operates and develops ten airports across Sweden.

Our role is to create the access Sweden needs to facilitate travel, business and meetings. Safe, satisfied customers are the foundation of Swedavia’s business. Swedavia is a world leader in developing airports with the least possible environmental impact. The group has annual revenue of about 5 billion Swedish kronor and 2,400 employees.

Ryanair has confirmed to do a permanent switch to Landvetter Airport. It will use the same contract until March 31 (the same they had on GSE) but after March 31 they need to sign a new contract with Landvetter and pay the same fees other airlines already do. They will not get any discounts. Same goes for Wizz Air that also need to switch permanently to GOT.

I'm counting the days until they do partial switch from Stockholm Skavsta to Stockholm Arlanda. I can't really see a reason why they shouldn't move to Arlanda. Does anybody really travel from Skavsta these days? I switched to Arlanda approx. 1 year ago, will not go back to a low-cost terminal.
