Today Ryanar announced they will be the first airline to fly to Castellon. With routes to London-Stansted and Bristol. They go on sale on Friday.
It was built in 2011 and was close to being closed as there was no commercial routes from there.

Castellon

Post by Ryanair Ltd. on Thu 12 Mar 2015 - 9:07

They will be probably flying to Bristol and Stansted.
Built in 2010 no aircraft has ever landed. Cost of airprot 300 million. Ghost airport.
Wonder why Castellon. they have obtained FREE landing charges and operation charges.
Sneaky..
But I am surprised, their move was to go bigger and main airports, you can see that just by looking at the old airport list how many small regional airports have been deserted.
I dont understand.

Cheers.

They get free operation and landing charges affraid
I do not understand as well.
Its a little funny that they said they want to charge 31.99 EUR for a flight, especially as you can fly to Valencia from Stansted and Bristol for 24.99 EUR, considering they get to fly there without airport fees.
Do you know how long they have this agreement for?
Best Regards.

Seems strange...

"" But now Ryanair is ready to take full advantage of the distressed airport’s location in the popular tourism destination of Valencia, with flights to and from London Stansted to Castellón starting this winter, with prices as low as £19.99.

“Ryanair is pleased to launch our biggest ever London Stansted winter 2015 schedule, with two new routes to Castellón and Ponta Delgada—110 in total—and more flights on 23 routes, which will deliver over 18 million customers p.a. and support 18,000 on site jobs at London Stansted Airport,” said Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kenny Jacobs.""

Castellon was going to be closed after P.P politician was jailed, the runway was to be dug-up. Then they decided to re-open it due to very large costs of dismantlement when they realized they hadn't an air operators certificate. It doesn't have yet an IATA code, I think.

The advantage Ryanair is taking here is that Castellon is not part of AENA's monopoly in Spain. That is why probably.

Sorry about that. I read this on the internet. It seemed unusual that Ryanair would charge that much.
You are right it does not have an IATA code but it has an ICAO code of LEDS.
Must there be an IATA code to have commercial operations at an airport?
Thanks

Well, I am not an expert, so tell me if I'm wrong.
I am very sure that it is necessary to have the IATA code in order to have the gov. operating certificate. Otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to even open or receive any commercial flight.
They must have one given, maybe it's just not announced. I'll check on the Ryanair website now.

I have checked the FR website just now.
The flights are available from Oct 15 only to London Stansted, and seem unavailable to Bristol.
They are quite expensive, the cheapest fare was 31.99 € or pounds.
They will fly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. (2-4-6)

Thats interesting. They seem to be selling them from 15 September and are selling them to Bristol. It seems now they are only selling up to the 21 October for Bristol and Stansted can be booked for the full winter schedule.
I went through to the booking page a minute ago for a flight to Castellon from Bristol on the 16 September and saw what seems unusual. Baggage, reserve seats, Musical Equipment and Text was Free.
I then tried to book at Stansted and had the same. I thought Maybe I should try another place and looked for a flight to Berlin. It charged for all the same optional extra`s.
I saw somwhere that they said they would launch them at 31.99 EUR and if there were not many bookings they would lower it.

Yes, how odd.
Seats and baggage and also SMS text is free on the Castellon flights, but there is a Business plus fare which is much more expensive.
How weird. On STN - CDT there were 4 places already reserved. I cant really judge if that's a lot of demand or not.
- Bristol flights. I checked CDT - BRS, the flights seem to Stop from In November, last flight 21 Oct.
The turnarounds seem all to be 30 minute instead of 25 min.

Strange. I really don't know whats wrong with these routes,
- Only from 15sept - 21 Oct at Bristol, why?
- All optional Free - baggage, seats... why?
- 30 min turnaround - why?
- Castellon airport itself, why?

I found out Castellon airport is owned by SNC-Lavalin.
Then own Nimes airport and a few other french ones...
So yes, they got a good deal there.
They are cutting the routes to Reus and Valencia from STN and BRS to offer flights to Castellon.

But I don't think they'll open it currently if they don't have enough aircraft.
