Post by atoutprix on Fri 10 Oct 2008 - 12:40

London Gatwick airport (LGW) is located 45 km south of London.
At the moment (October 2009), Ryanair links Gatwick with Ireland (Dublin, Shannon, Cork), Spain (Alicante, Girona, Madrid) and Stockholm Skavsta.

Runway :

in use : 08R/26L, 3316x46 m
A secondary runway for use only in emergency or when the main runway is undergoing maintenance : 08L/26R , 2565x45 m.
They cannot be used simultaneously as they are not sufficiently far apart.
Gatwick is the busiest single-runway airport in the world !

Aligning on 26L :

Terminals :

South Terminal, with three piers - where are the Ryanair flights

North terminal, with three piers, amongst them the famous pier 6, linked to the terminal by a bridge spanning an active taxyway.

South at the right, North behind, to the left :

The two terminals are linked by a train fully automatised, frequence is at least one train every 6 min, it's free and rapid :

South Terminal : arrival hall

Ryanair desks (at the right) :

South Terminal (on a rainy day) :

Transportation :

There is a direct access from the South Terminal to the railway station, with frequent trains to London Victoria Station - or to Brighton, and the Southern railway net.
The "Gatwick Express" is direct to Victoria (but not cheap...)

The railway station :

Airport official website :

Gatwick Aviation Museum :

Not far from the airport, you can see it at take-off, but not easy to reach unless by car - and rarely open - look at the website :

Ryanair is developing its flights from Gatwick to international destinations :

Ryanair Launches 6th Low Fare Route From London Gatwick

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (26th Nov) increased the pressure on high fares airlines easyjet and British Airways as it announced its sixth route from London Gatwick with the launch of a new daily service to/from Dusseldorf (Weeze) from 7th January 2009. This follows Ryanair’s recent announcement of routes to Barcelona (Girona) and Alicante.

Ryanair’s secured additional Gatwick slots following the collapse of a number of high cost airlines operating from the airport. Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares will directly challenge the high fares airlines currently operating from Gatwick.

Ryanair’s new Gatwick route to/from Dusseldorf (Weeze) switches from its London Stansted base where Ryanair has reduced capacity by 20% as a result of high costs at Stansted.

Ryanair celebrated its sixth London Gatwick route by releasing 1million €10 seats for travel in December, January and February and encourages passengers to log on to www.ryanair.com before midnight Sunday to secure one of these €10 seats.
